Behind the Story: Cal Poly Entrepreneurship Club President, Kalen Goo, Heads the First Start-Up Career Fair

This story was quite a process. Once the ball got rolling, however, it was a wonderful experience. When first assigned a story, Helyn and I had a difficult time finding our path. We began with an idea about online dating and ended up, well, with a story about entrepreneurship. How did that happen? Well, a lack of online daters willing to share their horrendous dating stories was the start of the issue. Without sources, there really is no story and in the midst of week five midterms and scavenging to find post-graduation careers, we decided it was time to switch directions. When Kim gave us the heads up about Kalen Goo and the start-up career fair we knew it was a great option.

“We want to show how people can dive into the world of entrepreneurship and reap the different benefits from it,” Goo said. “It allows for creative freedom and interdisciplinary connections that entrepreneurship has.”

Kalen Goo gave us everything we needed to create an engaging and exciting story. From his day in the life routine in Hawaii to find himself running for Cal Poly Entrepreneur’s President, Goo, who is a fabulous interviewee, was more than excited to share his story and the goals of the Entrepreneurship Club

Writing the story I found that it was a pleasure to learn from Goo about what these students are doing, and getting to create a story that reflects the work and time Goo and the club put into the career fair feels very powerful.

“Working on the media components for this story was a fun new challenge. I got to develop some of my more technical skills while being able to express myself freely. It also helps that CPE was such an interesting and dynamic subject to cover. Kalen gave us plenty to work with,” said Helyn about the process.

From reaching out to Goo to speaking with David Bartolomucci, the founder of Roopairs, who will be speaking at the event, finding people who were excited to speak about entrepreneurship and its impact on their lives was easy. The interviews were rewarding and made writing a story about the topic engaging and motivating.

Reporting during the pandemic is difficult and it can be hard to find a good connection with a story. Without meeting someone in person or being present in the meat of the story there is often a disconnect between the reporter and the story. This story, however, helped get over that disconnect. The interviewee and subject, Kalen, is so full of life and passionate about the topic that writing the story felt natural.
