Poetry Out Loud materials! Distributing packets to excited high school participants to help them choose, memorize, and recite a poem. Six area high schools will be competing to see who will move on to the state and national competitions. In the past, national winners have competed in Washington D.C. for a $20,000 prize, as well as a stipend for their school to purchase books of poetry.

For each contest, a panel of qualified judges critiques the students based on 6 categories: physical appearance, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, and overall performance.There is also an accuracy judge who reads along with the recitation. Points are docked for any missing or misplaced stanzas.
