Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Southwestern College Entry Title: Social Justice Finds a Powerful Voice in Student Journalists Entry Credit: Camila Gonzalez, Diego Higuera Judge Comment: Excellent range of stories deals with the issues with authentic voices. Outstanding writing on the cemetery story. No mention of asylum in Haitians story despite it being in the headline. Good to get a voice pushing back against the baseball team's weak statement about keeping the Rangers name. Did you visit the SW administration office in person to try to get a comment on Point Loma? Sometimes phone messages and emails are not enough. Anyway, overall great work and consistency throughout the entries.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Mt. San Antonio Entry Title: Somos Entry Credit: Vanessa Feliciano Judge Comment: Good range of stories, describing issues through profiles and voices, particularly Latinitos. Vaccine story needed to explain what is being done to get Latinos vaccinated in the wake of hesitancy. Didn't understand why Huerta was forced to quit work and why she was beaten at a protest.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: City College of San Francisco Entry Title: City College Engages with a National Reckoning on Social Justice by The Guardsman Staff Entry Credit: Kaiyo Funaki, Loretta Bonifacio, Casey Michie, Samya Brohmi, Johanna Ochoa, JohnTaylor Wildfeuer Judge Comment: Useful stories, educating readers on issues and offering solutions, particularly in Hate story. AFAM needed comment from the administration. I had never heard about these kinds of issues in the Land story.
Competition Comment: The best entries were the ones that covered the issues through profiles and authentic voices and their stories and not just covering a panel discussion or protest. Some good writing in there among the winners. Especially good were the Southwest College cemetery story and salon story.
