Judge Comment: This publication has it all — interesting stories well told — and what more could you want? Its designers show restraint and discernment and embrace the traditional elements and standards of publication design — all while injecting it with fresh energy and a strong voice. A few specific notes: • strong content (without which, what is the point?) • strong writing and verbal messaging (also critical to a design’s success) • compelling images (photographic and illustrated) and impressive use of those images • meticulous attention to detail on all fronts, including small details that add flair and enhance without being purely decorative • strong grid work, spacing and alignment • strong hierarchy and organization • strong layouts • strong typographic voice and choices throughout • strong visual identity and continuity (if I had to reassemble 10 magazines whose pages had flown away in the wind, it would be easy to reconstruct this one, even without the folios.) All in all, terrific work. Congratulations to the content creators, editors, designers and advisers of Dig. Well done.

Judge Comment: The enthusiasm for design in this magazine is palpable. Strong vision and creativity pair with bold typography and strong illustrations to create undeniable impact. That said, the design, is a bit too heavy-handed and often gets in the way of the content, calling attention to itself rather than serving the reader and leading them into and through the informational experience.
