Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Loyola Marymount University Entry Title: Freshman Ava Toone brings world-class experience to LMU Entry Credit: Katie Nishimura Judge Comment: An athlete profile doesn't present a complex concept to illustrate. In that regard, the illustrator had less of a challenge than the illustrators of the other entries. But this illustration is executed almost flawlessly, incorporating artistic expression, information and a high-energy portrait into a single frame. Additionally, the scribbles provide a nice contrast to the block stencil font.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Humboldt State -- Lumberjack Entry Title: Fall sports in review Entry Credit: Elliott Portillo Judge Comment: It would have been much easier to stack a few images side-by-side and be done with it, but this illustrator went far beyond by letting the athletes 'jump out' of their frames, creating a cohesive grouping of images. Something other than a white background and perhaps a different font could have moved this into the first-place position.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Pepperdine University Entry Title: An Open Essay: Abortion and the Holocaust Entry Credit: Samantha Miller, Anitiz Muonagolu Judge Comment: Incorporating sensitive topics such as abortion, the Holocaust and religion into an illustration is no easy feat. The illustrators deserve commendation for doing so. Weaving the background image into the art could have made this more effective.
