  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: City College of San Francisco
Entry Title: Chefs Adapt to Survive Changes in the Service Industry
    Entry Credit: Bo Lenschau
Judge Comment: We've all been hit hard by the pandemic and these images provide an insightful look into how the restaurant industry has responded. I appreciate that the photographer utilized a variety of focal lengths, included detail shots as well as scene setters, and photographed similar subjects (chefs) from varied angles. The employee/customer interaction image tells the entire story in one frame and would have been better utilized as the opening, primary photo, but that's more a design issue.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: El Camino College
Entry Title: A family story with a Hollywood ending
    Entry Credit: Gary Kohatsu
Judge Comment: It's always interesting the meet the people behind a family-owned business, especially a theater as well-known as this one. The family portrait in the theater (which was underplayed among other less relevant images) quickly introduces me to the subjects and allows me to see their faces and provides a sense of scale regarding the size of the theater, while supporting images provide a sense of place, show the roles the family members serve, and illustrate the community support.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Pierce College
Entry Title: Polo Pony Express/ Polo Ponies Play to Win
    Entry Credit: Raquel Frohlich
Judge Comment: Polo is not an easy sport to photograph. It's unpredictable and the horses move very quickly. To that end, the photographer deserves commendation for their opening action shot. Sometimes less is more and in this case, using fewer images would have allowed the stronger images and the images with subtle details to read better. But many of the key elements are there, regardless of how the images were packaged. The care for the horses, the trophy, the 'sideline' social time - all contribute nicely to the story.
