Best Magazine Inside Page/Spread Design ( More than 15,000 Students)Back
Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Cal State Long Beach Entry Title: Where to Meditate on Campus Entry Credit: Gabriela Gobaton, Mijin Kim, Natalie Barr Judge Comment: While there were only 3 locations, the design was helpful and concise on where to go to meditate. The colors used also weren't jarring and the elements used on the page all complimented each other.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Cal Poly Pomona Entry Title: Bronco Guide: A Guide to Local Hiking Entry Credit: Eddie Rangel Judge Comment: I very much liked the headline treatment. The key could have been smaller and I might have moved the icons with each hike into the text area to draw more attention to the text.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: San Jose State University Entry Title: What We Think About... Entry Credit: Kah Mun Chia Judge Comment: Every element doesn't need "something." Meaning it is OK to just have square elements not tilted on a page. Also, pay attention to the images inside the frames; try to make each head the same size. Otherwise, very clean!
Competition Comment: In the future, if you are entering a spread into a competition, upload the pages as a spread. It's harder to judge a spread as single pages.
In this category, some of the pages were lacking in a dominant headlines, which will draw a reader into the story. Many entries weren't afraid of white space, which can be very helpful in magazine design. You don't always have to fill the entire page.
Keep up the good work!
