Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Humboldt State - El Lenador Entry Title: May 2021 Cover - COVID-19: What you need to know right now Entry Credit: Raven Marshall Judge Comment: A creative way to illustrate a covid article without showing the virus. Nice allusion to the pine trees of Humboldt too, making it place specific.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: California State University Monterey Bay Entry Title: Lutrinae Best Illustration - Poetry Illustration Entry Credit: Malia Savella Judge Comment: Nice 3 color design with line drawing, enlivening what could be a very static portrayal of a poetry reading. Could be improved somewhat by tweaking composition / scale, making it clearer what is being depicted.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Pepperdine University Entry Title: Opinion: The Graphic Must Take Responsibility For Educating Its Readers Entry Credit: Samantha Miller Judge Comment: A bold, graphic illustration playing on tropes of decoder ring ads in old comic books. One minor criticism is that it looks nothing like a decoder ring that had number and letters, although that may be lost on younger readers!
Competition Comment: The winning entries draw on a range of styles, choosing unexpected depictions to draw the reader in to the stories they illustrate.
