Judge Comment: Clever headlines are good as long as they don't call attention to themselves. They should bring a light smile to someone and not hit them over the head. I think the tree headline fell into the latter category. Maybe 'Root cause sought of tree toppling at Pitzer Mounds'. But I like the thought. Outdoor class .. To the point and clever, catches the flavor of the story. Yerb ... Clever, I would have liked to have seen the second part of the head explain why it's popular. Maybe "Yerb your enthusiasm: 5C students run on highly caffeinated drink" (Great story, too!)

Entry Title: "See what they saw: HSU Timbersports team in action," "Hyflex in Hyflux," and "HSU archery team hits the target."

Judge Comment: I really like how the headlines work in concert with the photos. Saw ... Got a light chuckle, which is the reaction a reader should have. The headline doesn't hit the reader over the head with cleverness. Hyflux ... I assume Hyflux is a play on high flux. So why not use the real words? And it's not really in flux, but instructors are using it in creative ways. So maybe "Instructors put Hyflex in high flux". Archery ... "hits the target" and "shoots for success" are two of the same thing. I expected to see that the team won competitions based on the main head. Just trying a little too hard.
