Balloon Girl SLO: Behind the Story

Balloon Girl SLO is a local business started by Cal Poly journalism alumni, Kate Hardisty. Hardisty made the gutsy choice to start her business while she was still a student, in the fall of 2018. Hardisty has made a name for herself locally offering her services for birthdays, baby showers, weddings, and other picturesque events.

Ballon Girl SLO is a family business, as Hardisty recieves help from her mother and sister who live nearby in Morro Bay. While Hardisty began with student birthdays, her business has grown and is attracting the attention of people hosting larger events, and her work was recently featured in wedding magazines. Balloon Girl SLO is a charming Cal Poly success story.

When first assigned this story, our group looked forward to covering a fun business with an upbeat female founder. Anna Howard first interviewed Hardisty, discussing her inspiration for starting the business, how she handled being a student and a business owner, and how she operates now.

“This story was really fun to report on. Kate has a great business and was really easy to work with.”

Joey Stephens worked on the video, capturing Hardisty at her business for a compelling discussion accompanied by beautiful pictures of many of Hardisty’s balloon bouquets.

In the on camera interview, Hardisty spoke of why she loves her job.

“My favorite part about running this business is seeing how happy everyone is when I deliver balloons to them. I’m always taking fun surprises to people, and they don’t even know that it’s coming,” said Hardisty. “It’s literally the best job ever.”

Joey said he enjoyed working on the project.

“Getting to put together something for a Cal Poly journalism alum turned entrepreneur was a special experience. I wish Kate only the best as her business continues to grow.”

Katherine Lane worked on the project creating interactive shopping images of customers with their balloon bouquets.

“This was one of my favorite Intrepid stories. It was so colorful and fun. Plus its great to see a Cal Poly success story,” she said.
